She held her hands above my hips and knees
She was searching for the light and heat in me
I closed my eyes to the colors in my mind
And she drew lines over me
Until we fell asleep
One night I think I tried to run away
But first I looked inside her door
And there was she, awake just for me
She wrapped me in her rosy hair and held me there
Until we fell asleep
She said,
If you feel like a child
Just come to me
I’ll be your guide
I know you inside, I know you inside
She stayed up all night and she prayed for me
She slipped a thread under my door and she
Wrapped it round me tight and clenched her eyes with all her might
Rocking her body back and forth
She doesn’t do that anymore
She says,
If you feel like a child,
Just sit and breathe
I’m not your guide
The balance isn’t right
I had to see her face and tell her why
She hadn’t heard from me in quite some time
I thought it meant we couldn’t be friends
The things she needed I couldn’t provide
When she said
If you feel like a child
You can always sit with me
We walk in stride
I love you
